Tools needed
- Drill/driver
- Level
- Tape measure
- Jigsaw or hole saw
Materials needed
- Shutter exhaust fan with thermostat
- Automatic window opener
- Exterior mounting screws
Step-by-step
- 1
Plan cross-flow: put the exhaust fan high on one end and an intake vent low on the opposite end.
- 2
Cut the opening and mount the shutter fan, sealing the frame against the panel.
- 3
Set the fan's thermostat to your target high temperature.
- 4
Install the automatic opener on a roof or side vent per its stroke length.
- 5
Adjust the opener's wax-piston setting for the temperature you want it to crack open.
- 6
Test on a warm day: the vent should open and the fan kick on as it heats, and reverse as it cools.
Common mistakes
- • Undersizing the fan for the greenhouse volume
- • No low intake vent, so the fan can't pull air
- • Mounting the opener where the vent binds
Maintenance & next steps
Clean the shutters and check the opener's piston each season; they wear with heavy cycling.
For hardwired high-voltage fan circuits or large commercial-scale ventilation.
