Tools needed
- Professional hair dryer
- Scissors
- Tape measure
Materials needed
- 3M window insulator kit
- Double-sided mounting tape
- Alcohol cleaning wipes
Step-by-step
- 1
Wipe the window trim frame clean with alcohol wipes so the tape sticks.
- 2
Apply the double-sided mounting tape around the outer edge of the window trim.
- 3
Cut the clear insulation film a couple of inches larger than the opening.
- 4
Press the film onto the tape, starting at the top and pulling it snug across the frame.
- 5
Run a high-heat hair dryer evenly across the film to shrink it tight and wrinkle-free.
- 6
Trim the excess film close to the tape for a clean, nearly invisible finish.
Common mistakes
- • Skipping the alcohol wipe so the tape lets go in a week
- • Pulling the film crooked before it's taped down
- • Holding the dryer too close and melting a hole
Maintenance & next steps
Peel the film and tape off in spring; reapply a fresh kit next winter.
Not usually needed — but call a pro if the window itself is rotted or won't close.
