How to Replace Worn Hood and Trunk Lift Support Struts

When a hood or hatch won't stay up, the gas struts have lost their charge. Swapping in new nitrogen-charged struts is a quick, satisfying fix that prevents a heavy lid dropping on you.

Tools needed

  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Telescoping prop rod or helper

Materials needed

  • Replacement lift support struts (matched pair)
  • Shop gloves

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Prop the hood or hatch securely open with a rod or a second person.

  2. 2

Find the spring clip at each strut ball-socket end and flip it up with a flathead.

  3. 3

Pop the old strut off the upper and lower ball studs.

  4. 4

Press the new strut onto the studs until each socket clicks home.

  5. 5

Re-seat the clips so the struts can't pop off.

  6. 6

Remove the prop and test that it holds fully open.

Common mistakes

  • • Replacing only one of a pair
  • • Letting the lid fall while a strut is off
  • • Installing a strut upside down (orientation matters for oil seal life)

Maintenance & next steps

Replace both sides as a set and expect several years of service from quality struts.

When to call a professional
