Tools needed
- Non-contact voltage tester
- Insulated wire strippers
- Screwdriver set
Materials needed
- Motion/occupancy sensor switch
- Wire nuts
- Wall plate
Step-by-step
- 1
Turn off the breaker and verify the switch is dead with a voltage tester.
- 2
Remove the old switch and note the line, load, and ground (and neutral if present).
- 3
Check that your sensor switch matches your wiring — many require a neutral wire.
- 4
Connect the matching wires with wire nuts per the diagram.
- 5
Fold the wires in, screw the switch to the box, and add the plate.
- 6
Restore power and set the timeout and sensitivity to suit the room.
Common mistakes
- • Buying a switch that needs a neutral when your box has none
- • Leaving the circuit live
- • Setting the auto-off timer too short
Maintenance & next steps
Wipe the sensor window occasionally and adjust the timeout as seasons change.
For boxes with no neutral, aluminum wiring, or multi-switch (3-way) setups you're unsure about.
