Tools needed

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Bucket

Materials needed

  • Outdoor foam faucet covers
  • Shut-off valves
  • Freeze-proof sillcocks (optional)
  • Plumbing tape

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Locate and close the interior shut-off valve feeding each outdoor spigot.

  2. 2

Open the outdoor faucet fully to drain the line.

  3. 3

Disconnect and store all hoses so they can't trap water.

  4. 4

Open the bleeder cap on the shut-off valve to drain residual water into a bucket.

  5. 5

Slip an insulated foam cover over each exterior faucet.

Common mistakes

  • • Leaving a hose attached, which traps water and splits the pipe
  • • Forgetting the interior shut-off and bleeder valve

Maintenance & next steps

Repeat every fall; remove covers and restore water in spring.
